The John Henry Eldred Jr. Foundation is proud to announce that 39 small public libraries across the Western United States will receive a combined total of $220,050 in new grants.

These librariesโ€”located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Utahโ€”serve more than 247,000 residents in rural communities, where populations range from just 180 to 17,310.

Why Rural Libraries Matter

Rural libraries matter for every community and Hoopla is here to help along side The John Henry Eldred Jr. Foundation.

Rural libraries are more than places to borrow booksโ€”they are lifelines for their communities. They provide safe gathering spaces, youth engagement opportunities, and critical access to technology and services. In many cases, they are the only hub for learning and connection in their region.

As Mike Deetsch, Executive Director of the Foundation, explains, โ€œRural libraries are more than buildings with books. They are lifelines for their communities. We are proud to invest in the innovative ways these libraries foster belonging, literacy, and opportunity.โ€

Right-Sized Support for Local Impact

Recognizing that each library understands its unique needs, the Foundation awarded grants ranging from $1,500 to $10,000, with most libraries receiving $5,500. This flexibility ensures that projects can succeed and adapt to local priorities.

Here are three examples of how these grants will make a difference:

Parker Public Library (Parker, AZ): Parker will expand tween and teen programming in one of Arizonaโ€™s most underserved counties. Weekly creative, educational, and social programs will help re-engage youth ages 10โ€“17, promoting literacy and connection.

Stanley Community Library (Stanley, ID): Stanley will launch a weekly Pre-K/Story Time program for families in a region with no organized early-childhood education. The grant will fund child-sized furniture, organizers, and supplies to create a welcoming space for early learning.

Lordsburg Hidalgo Library (Lordsburg, NM): Lordsburg will purchase laptops to provide reliable access to technology for children in a community where many families lack computers and internet. These tools will support STEM programs, coding clubs, and digital literacy workshops.

Building Stronger Communities

Every book borrowed, every youth program offered, every conversation sharedโ€”these moments strengthen communities. Through these grants, rural libraries can continue to serve as anchors of learning, creativity, and human connection.
